I Randomly Started Jotting Down Thoughts Late in the 2nd Quarter

I watched the Knicks-Mavs game on DVR tonight and not live so I was off of the Tweetdeck for a night. Still, I couldn’t resist writing some live commentary.

Knicks-Mavs

I need to know what Melo and Marion were saying in 2nd quarter

I have such low expectations for STAT right now that I found myself saying “wow he really has it going tonight” and he had 10 points

Tyson’s wrist is going to be a problem on offense, he can’t catch

Lin looks very hesitant in P&R for some reason

JR needs to stop shooting 3s and go to the basket (SHOCKING)

Lucky to only be down 7

2nd half

STAT has done a really good job on Dirk so far, who’s helping him out by taking awful shots. He’s Dirk and he usually makes them. He’s starting to now.

Now Dirk is just nailing everything. STAT playing good D, Dirk hitting ridiculous Dirk fade-aways that he basically eats for breakfast

Why does this team stink in the 1st and 3rd quarters? Know your adjustments coming out of the locker room

The free throws are officially a problem

What happened to Shump? He played well in the first half

GOOD GOD KIDD AND MAHINMI KILLED LIN

YGTMYFT Melo

Mike should get thrown out – team could use some life and he’s not doing anything tonight anyway

Dirk…. 9 points in the quarter. He has made 4 of the most ridiculous looking shots I’ve ever seen and I have not been the last bit shocked to see them go in

Lin just not going anywhere on some P&Rs, like Douglas earlier in the season he’s often just dribbling to the other side of the pick and waiting there

The turnovers thing is officially a problem

Landry’s first basket comes midway through the 3rd…  just remembered that his mom got into it with Alan Hahn on Twitter over one of his articles this week

Novak can’t defend… once team’s start exploiting that, his minutes are gonna drop and Jorts is gonna get some of em

Especially once he stops hitting 60% of his threes

Melo…?

Lin’s PPP off “almost TOs” has to be like 2.6

Of course Novak makes a three as soon as I talk about him starting to miss… 20 for his last 33

9 boards 4 dimes for Landry? Hm

Melo can’t even make tip-ins

Mike should get thrown out

Hello again, Bad J.R.

Roddy Beaubois is killing us, Shump and Lin don’t know what to do with him

Oh good, JR tech. This is fun

Oh my did Dirk just rock JR to sleep or what? Not a good just stretch for Earl

4th quarter

Novak hits again, maybe we’ll make a run at this thing… doesn’t feel like it though

Why is Shump wearing a headband tonight?

Knicks usually turn it over a lot and force a lot of TOs, they’re only doing one of those tonight

Hello again, Bad Baron Davis

Jorts overexcited again and trying to overcompensate for his wrist

Roddy is Victor Cruz and Shump is Terence Newman

DISCOUNT TRIPLE SPLASH

Clyde CANNOT say plus/minus, he’s messed it up 3 times tonight

Novak has hit (I think) threes 3′s off screens tonight, he had mostly been spotting up to get his 3′s but they’re running plays for him now

Not one guy has hit Amar’e on the roll tonight. He’s not rolling into open space much though. After a hot start, he’s been nowhere in 2nd half

Shump passes up an open 3 to shoot a contested 3

STAT’s done a good job on Dirk tonight

SHUMP TO STAT – within 3

Now Shump’s D-ing up these last few minutes, all over the place

11-0 to start the 4th, started with those missed FTs by Roddy

BOOM DIZZLE!!!!!

Ugh Baron heat check floater

SHUMP TAKES THE CHARGEEEEEE

Keep this lineup out there Mike….

STAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT Knicks up 1

Mavs haven’t scored.. 4:43 left

Of course… Dirk. Always Dirk. What a shot

Bad foul by Shump sends Dirk to the line. This team is not playing very smart

Mike brings Melo and Lin back for Jorts and Davis after Mavs score, this is probably the right move I guess. I changed my mind pretty quickly though, so you might not wanna trust me. Also, doing the opposite of what Gregg Popovich did to beat the Mavs

Novak heat check then fouls Dirk, not smart

Novak cannot play D and the Mavs are exploiting again

15-0 Knicks run followed by 9-0 Mavs run, this game is over

STAT plays great D, Dirk walks, hits ridiculous shot off 1 foot, Tyson gets T’d up while waiting to check in

The game is over, Tyson’s gonna get suspended soon, Mike should’ve gotten thrown out a while ago (he gets suspended after 3 more, FYI)

Knicks used up all their energy storming their way back into the game, then let up at the end. Disappointing

Have to stop putting yourself in big holes coming out of the locker room

After Melo and Lin came back in the Knicks basically just stopped doing everything

STAT gets the exact same call they didn’t give to Melo earlier in the game and Mike is yelling again

Melo was nowhere tonight

Knicks just completely collapsed after that run… no rhythm on O, stupid fouls, leaving guys open… ugh

You can’t just punch them in the face and hope they wilt, you have to beat them into submission

Yeah… Tyson can’t catch with that thing on his wrist

Dirk: 1-8 first half 7-10 second half

Note to self… do not anger big German basketball players

This thing could spiral out of control if the Knicks lose to San Antonio tomorrow

Rising Stars Challenge Mock Draft

Pretty self-explanatory: I took part in a Rising Stars Challenge Mock Draft with Adam Reisinger of ESPN.com (@TheAkronHammer). You can check out the results on Adam’s personal site here. I had a lot of fun with this.

STAT’s Shoddy Shooting Off Screens

Photo: Streeter Lecka/Getty Images

The New York Knicks are shooting 17.9% off screens this year according to mySynergySports, and I wanted to find out why. New York has had 35 plays classified by Synergy as ending “Off Screens.” They’ve produced 0.54 points per possession (PPP) on these plays, good for 27th in the NBA. The main culprit is Amar’e Stoudemire.

Housekeeping Note

As you already know if you follow me on Twitter, I’ve joined the staff of the ESPN True Hoop Network affiliate HardwoodParoxysm.com. You will be able to find my writing there every Monday, starting next Monday (1/16). Unfortunately, this means I’ll be writing here less often. I’ll post whenever I can – hopefully 2-3 times a week – and the work will be of the usual quality.

Tracking 2/3 Switches in the Knicks-Bobcats Game

Last week, in the wake of the Knicks’ loss to the Charlotte Bobcats, there was a firestorm of controversy surrounding New York’s strategy of switching on nearly every pick. Two days later, in advance of the Knicks-Wizards game, New York Times beat writer Howard Beck spoke with D’Antoni and then tweeted the following:

As I mentioned yesterday, D’Antoni said it’s not the plan to switch on every pick/roll. Mostly done in emergency. Some #s in next tweet…

vs. Charlotte, Knicks switched on pick/roll 14 times. Bobcats scored on 4 of those possessions, for 8 points. Not a major impact.

Those totals do not account for “switch” in transition, just halfcourt. Also, does not include a 2/3 switch. Just the obvious: 1/4, 1/5 etc

@HowardBeckNYT Howard Beck, NBA and Knicks beat writer for the New York Times

I, after having read Zach Lowe of SI.com’s piece on the Knicks’ manic switching on defense the previous day, countered by saying that the Knicks’ 2/3 switches often led to baskets. Howard responded by stating that the Knicks don’t consider that a switch because it doesn’t create a mismatch.

It was subsequently decided that I would track 2/3 switches in the next game the Knicks played against a team that could create a mismatch through getting those Knick defenders to switch. (Zach suggested Miami, Boston or Charlotte, being that their much bigger and stronger small forwards could take advantage of Fields on the defensive end). As such, I tracked every possession on which the Knicks had a 2/3 switch. It was really hard to keep track while watching the game live, but thanks to the magic of Synergy Sports Technology, I was able to do so. Here’s what transpired:

What’s Going on with Danny Granger?

Photo: Getty Images

There are much more high-profile teams than the Indiana Pacers, and as such there are much more high-profile star players than Danny Granger. In fact, Granger has pretty much made a career out of being overlooked. He had a stunning draft day drop to the 17th pick in 2005, but he quickly and quietly blossomed into an All-Star caliber forward. But the noise surrounding the Pacers after last year’s surprising playoff appearance and their subsequent signing of David West was anything but quiet. Many expected the Pacers to make a jump into the top half of the Eastern Conference this season. And in the early goings of the season, that’s exactly what’s happened. The Pacers are off to a 6-2 start, good enough for the third best record in the East. What makes their start remarkable is that Granger is off to the worst start of his career.

Pour One Out for Eric Maynor

Photo: Layne Murdoch/NBAE/Getty Images

Oklahoma City Thunder backup point guard and one of my favorite players Eric Maynor has torn his right ACL and is out for rest of the year. Injuries are part of the game, but this one really sucks. It was just a few weeks ago that I wrote about him and Russell Westbrook and how perfectly they complement each other as starter and backup. Here’s to a speedy recovery.

You Better Recognize: LaMarcus Aldridge in the Pick-and-Roll

Photo: Sam Forenich/Getty Images

The Trail Blazers have had unfortunate luck when it comes to injuries, especially with their big men and especially with their high draft picks over the last few years. The one guy who seems to have avoided that plague so far in his career is power forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who has become Portland’s franchise player after injuries ended the career of fan favorite and former All-Star Brandon Roy. Aldridge took a big statistical leap last year, posting career highs in points and rebounds per game as well as more advanced stats like PER and Win Shares. If the early season returns in 2011-12 are any indication, Aldridge is due for another bump this year. The most impressive part of his game so far has been the pick-and-roll.

DeMarcus Cousins, Paul Westphal and “Poor Performance”

Photo: Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

Kings coach Paul Westphal recently got into a verbal spat with DeMarcus Cousins that may or may not have concluded with Cousins’ demanding a trade. Only Westphal and Cousins really know what happened, and they apparently have two different ideas about what that was. In the wake of their disagreement, Westphal decided it was time for Cousins to start coming off the bench. He made sure to let the media know that Cousins was not being benched because of their altercation, but because of “poor performance.” This needs to be settled immediately: DeMarcus Cousins’ “performance” so far this season has not been poor. In fact, his performance has been decidedly not poor.

One Night Only

Photo: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

It all started, innocently enough, with a defensive rebound on the second possession of the fourth quarter. We didn’t know it at the time, but Tracy McGrady was about to go vintage T-Mac. After he snatched an errant Dwyane Wade shot out of the air, McGrady  had just 3 points and 3 rebounds. By the time he was done doing his thing, he’d end up with a final line of 16 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and one more notch on his belt as he helped the Hawks (!), his fourth team in the last three seasons, hand the Miami Heat their first loss of the season.

“It feels good. It’s been a long time since I’ve had this feeling. Everything feels good, feels right.”

Tracy McGrady – 1/2/11
